a low low low i'm having mark and this is breaking the set so let's talk about obamacare now regardless of your thoughts on this controversial controversial piece of legislation what it does above all else is a mandate people to buy into private insurance companies what many of you may not know is that the chief architect of this legislation is a woman named elizabeth fowler who's also the former vice president for public policy and external affairs for wellpoint the nation's largest health insurance corporation basically she was the head a lobbyist for america's largest health insurance company and she drafted the very legislation that is the nothing short of an extraordinary gift to health insurance companies that isn't disgusting enough feller is now leaving the white house and passing through the corrupt revolving door that is the american corporatocracy to take a job as a senior lobbyist for the pharmaceutical giant johnson and johnson no doubt follow or use her profound influence in washington direct and more benefits for

a new cash cow elizabeth feller is the embodiment of everything that's wrong with washington politics so let's break that set. look at where you are seeing anything like. that. ok guys i want to turn your attention to a recent string of protests in mexico demonstrations at president pinioned yet those inauguration have resulted in sixty nine protesters detained who are facing charges of disturbing the peace a charge that could land them anywhere from five to thirty years in prison if that is the protests show violent demonstrations with people throwing molotov cocktails rocks and even burning down a bus station or of also been rumors of a number of fatalities at the hands of mexican riot police who've been using rubber bullets and directly aiming flash grenades at protesters who are demonstrating

against biased media coverage of the general elections as well as the return of president peña at those institutional revolutionary party or pre as oppressively controlled mexico for almost seventy years before it was ousted in two thousand so talk to me more about what's going on and joining me from mexico city is investigative journalist andrew canis andrew thank you so much for coming on. good but to be here but so andrew let's first talk about the mood in mexico city right now of the protests and it why don't you set the scene for our audience. yeah there's really more protests being organized some of them are the only peace this year in the city and as far as the mood is it's one of tension and security and certainly a lot of folks are bracing for what the return of the party that will of mexico over seventy one years mean especially when the first day of the three turn including the taliban the three very serious injuries and well over one hundred people were arrested there in what was the pretty rockets we brought that you just

the other problem though with the arrests and actually also with injuries as well is that apparently none of them occurred with the folks that were actually involved or destruction that one of the anarchist groups claimed responsibility for the resistance which is really trying to penetrate our perimeter and that was true mildly from the think that the news that was informing which was. in the mexican congress here it's the city. they were trying to penetrate the perimeter fence and they came out with a statement saying that none of our comrades none of our people are in jail or in solidarity with the people that are in jail and then the courts came out as well from a variety of human groups saying that actually a lot of these folks that were jailed were just literally picked the street or were demonstrators were not involved in the search in their you tube videos that were uploaded that showed a guy just eating your taco stand literally picked up among the prey it was really mad it's another guy in a suit that got picked up and like i said

a lot of peaceful demonstrators so not only was there excessive force that resulted in injuries of injuries critical condition people who need to have to itch that last vision one of their eyes. who had. head injuries weren't even in brain mind and that's what really gruesome photos there. and again it was well at least. by moving organizers if not by officials and so again a lot of the chest of course not exactly successfully targeted if it even was trying to be targeted at the folks involved in the search itself it looks like the main cause of much much of these interest injuries and and the possible death was the fact that the police were aiming their tear gas canisters not near it but directly at the protesters this is because the source is and was one of the leading causes of the injuries again that's what's causing the uncertainty the tension and even the fear across mexico definitely all of

a lot of condemnation coming from international human rights groups it sounds like there's a lot of aggressive force from that from the right place thank you for explaining all that and confirming some of these rumors and are these latest protests in mexico a part of the oh so. movement that was also equated with the so-called mexican spring or is it just branched off in a kind of just a whole swell of other movements and people there. just among human rights groups that were issuing concern economists including and the senior national by the way. the local officials human rights groups specific which is usually pretty stated so there's definitely a lot of concern not just among the protesters but among experts in human rights abuses as well. as far as the. concerned it's important to realize that this move by a hundred thirty one people out of the many university they uploaded their their id right after a very famous protest that shit the whole movement to the internet to show that

they were back to this because the first reaction by the next news media was that the students are just getting paid by the couple of the campaign or something like that and so they uploaded their id showed otherwise kind of embarrassed the next meeting and you know want to clean up a presidential debate before the election so the hundred thirty one people had to be better many were definitely by all the protests yesterday were definitely organized but that may not support the property destruction it definitely did not i spoke to several of the folks involved in that even let the property destruction which happened and therein lies a bit of the division with the movement but they nonetheless condemnations about the arrest the standard solidarity with them with all the protesters and they are very concerned that again the targeting of these protesters is very haphazard almost. completely chaotic and literally it was around and so they issued statements against that and pretty much their position reiterated their past the

stance that they don't engage property discuss destruction and. that that's basically their official stance toward forward this movement now will again move on really quickly there's a lot i want to get into and we don't have time but i wanted you to explain the significance of of pre returning to power after being ousted and why so many people are protesting this rain and also a lot of people are protesting televisa. the televised coverage of the general elections on bias talk about those two specific aspects of these protests and. well during the time time that this movement really surgeon started on this past may blowing right into just this last saturday and even on. that that i mean organized there was reports that were surfacing that confirms suspicions by the movement that they really had for a long time reports that surfaced in the guardian showing official documents and papers with links between the campaign and televisa arranging spots arranging

people treatment there was even a lead to believe revelation at one point that showed that the state department acknowledged as well that there was a systematic favorable treatment by deliveries of the then presidential candidate so. it's a recent inauguration and what protesters and social movements like are calling. of a presidential so-called victory. much than any of those being labeled as the televisa candidate he's the candidate that never really had very clear positions or apologies and this is it shows that actually at last you. book fair where there was a. fellow reporter of ours what is three most influential book and was and that's a difficult question for a lot of us into in terms of choosing three puppets and at the put it named three books until he actually struggled on cross two of mexico's most famous authors at least the burning name the viable answer showed in many ways i had a very early stage actually mean this is way back in last november why really g.m.

as kind of a fabricated media not necessarily a qualified presidential candidate one of the guys that got his me mixed up with carlos fuentes he called and reagan and carlos when this came out with a very telling quote he said looking at those every right not to read my books and it's very clear that he hasn't but he has no right to be. and that is again one of the leading concerns in addition to the repression of violence that really harkens back to the seventy one year reign of the free that chav and. indeed and one of your special case andrew is the drug war you know a lot of countries in latin america a lot of their leaders are rethinking their approach to the drug war. especially in light of a lot of legalization efforts and the united states i mean mexico's at the crosshairs here of the drug war do you think putin has the will be reproaching this issue or will he just kind of state of course what do you think. well first very honestly

and especially for folks like us to follow the progress very closely very innocently enough the proclamation in it after he won the election was that he would not change make incentives to get changes to the security policy so right away we knew that there was not going to be any closer in the nation and that chicago more more than other limited kind of things that we've seen so basically there wasn't really big changes expected but in talking to other fellow journalists and folks who've been covering this for a very long time the feeling is that if anything's going to change it's going to be increased the going to be real treatment that we saw from the towards one cartel in particular seen a lower cartel perhaps kind of expanding at the more cartels this is kind of like the general approach of the preop that has the cartels kind of i mean corrupt arrangements sort of under the table deals kind of you know share territory so to speak so that mine happened i mean we do know is that the on according to the

expose legal security experts and analysts like us that journalists alike has had a very favorable and long standing or anything with that scene or so this is actually documented by national public radio analysis that found that each leading high level arrest at any of the leading cartels was indeed with the single or cartel in this this is the biggest cartel in mexico the biggest cartel arguably in the world and so what started surfacing really was the idea that eerie kind of that there was people treatment being given out for the summer in order to kind. the drug war when there's more than one part of the orders more violence you know there's more destruction and kind of and it's sort of a kind of a white flag arrangement this was not in there was even links and this is exposed by michael out additional gagan tonight in several of the case in the leading investigators here in mexico that there were links between the fast and furious program and it seems with systematic kind of institute of fact

hug him. we will all be hauled out of the work. so basically lots of speculation and very little substance but i can't say i'm not surprised particular really when i look at the recent rhetoric from this do nothing congress take us for example armed services committee just described the looming defense cuts as quote an unacceptable risk that will quote severely diminished america's global posture right this would be devastating to a country that right now spends as much on its military as the next ten countries combined so would this be the end of defense as we know it that's exactly the question of my next days exporting a panel called the fiscal cliff what does this mean for defense and national security i'm joined now by colonel douglas macgregor thank you so much for taking the time sure so there is so much hype about this lawmakers are saying that this would be absolutely paralyzing to the military what's your response well let's understand what they're talking about in real terms right now if sequel straight happens which is at this point looks inevitable but it may not be you're looking at

fifty five to sixty billion dollars of cuts next year you're looking a little more than five hundred billion over ten years now in reality when you begin adding up everything that is committed to defense into its budget beyond the five hundred six hundred billion that we normally spend their one hundred billion dollars more in all sorts of departments national security agency central intelligence agency other organs united states government are also part of the defense establishment provide support for your almost up to a trillion dollars the issue is not the impact on the defense establishment is not going to make any difference in fundamental terms but the impact in local areas places like san diego that depend on billions of dollars of income from the defense industry that's the kind of impact that it will have and you've been in the military for a long time you have a vantage point that a lot of us don't have are there any specific defense programs that could be cut or even abolished and that sense well i think there are i think to be perfectly blunt

right now the f. thirty five program is an. a lot of trouble there's a lot of struggle inside the program several people have told me that you've got to cancel the f. thirty five b. this is the vertical takeoff and landing version of the f. thirty five to quote unquote save the program there are many people who are prepared to cut it because remember they see on the hill defense cuts in in different settings when you look at the f. thirty five if you look at the army's proposed ground combat vehicle thirty four billion dollars to build an eighty four ton vehicle which which strikes most rational people is absurd the hill says we don't need of six we can do without it it's not going to debilitate us in the meantime they're interested in sustaining other programs that have to do with the redistribution of taxpayer money so you just wrote an op ed for time dot com where you lay out kind of three options that we can solve this can you lay those out really sure very briefly the first thing is

we've got to reduce the regional unified commands your viewers may not know it but we have commands that essentially cover the entire globe right now we treat the entire world as a military backyard for the united states it's unnecessary it's unneeded we don't need it the rest of the world probably doesn't want it so we can afford to cut back on those then we need as a as a consequence to start consolidating hundreds of headquarters into a smaller number of joint force commands we have too many senior officers for fifteen million men during world war two in the army in the army air corps we had four four star generals today for a force of maybe eight hundred eighty thousand in the army in the air force we have twenty three four stars the thing has grown out of control largely as a result of the cold war you know i'm not going to sit here and of course defend not cutting defense but i can't help but think it's almost a distraction when when we have these giant corporations and wall street not being

taxed i mean can we solve this whole fiscal cliff by just taxing those no no unfortunately we can't we face something and this is this is what your viewers need to understand most americans haven't got this yet we're in new territory we have a sixteen trillion dollar debt. it has a potentially crushing impact people here in washington say you know that it doesn't matter what difference does it make we can borrow as much money as we like forever wrong we can't if you don't grow economically you can't attract investment truth is we're not really growing theoretically at one point two percent and falling europe is in serious trouble what happens in europe what happens in china where they're preparing for a hard landing all of these things will have an impact here we're in a lot of trouble you can't retire that debt so no you could confiscate all the wealth from the top five percent of the american people it would make a dent really it wouldn't make a try no your talk about running the government for six months. all right well

let's talk about the new the the new fiscal year two thousand and thirteen bill that was just passing and it's about a senate out awaiting on the house vote it's an increase of seventeen billion dollars is this a gross contradiction we're talking about you know we're facing this lou mean cliff that we're about to toss is the whole point that i think that we have this is the point the senate is living in fantasyland the people in the house know this is not sustainable there is more reality in the house and in the senate the senate is the political equivalent of a hollow in political terms united states they are remote from reality with very few exceptions and the republicans and democrats behave like a group of of drunks accusing each other of alcoholism the words everyone is spending into oblivion it's going to stop because we can't afford it and it's really going to stop after we go off multiple cliffs and we can't borrow any more money that's what lies in the future so you're i mean what you're proposing doesn't

seem like what a lot of lawmakers are assessing as the impending doom that they need to to really realistically approach so how is this all going to play out when you run out of money you have to do something else but when did the british leave india they didn't believe india when they should have which was really. right after world war one and it made no sense to stay they were losing money they left when they were broke after world war two when they had nothing and they had no choice but to leave people when they're given no choice and they have nobody make hard decisions were will take another couple of years to get there but we're going to begin to see some of it over the next twenty four months. and you know let's talk about in this recent bill you know they're increasing it by seventeen billion dollars at the same time they're cutting thirty thousand personnel i mean it's just so bizarre it's like it just seems like you're right they are living in this fantasy land when you hit on something else the generals in the annals unfortunately historically are

quite willing to send soldiers sailors airmen and marines on to the street but we never lose any generals we never lose any admirals that's the problem with the massive command overhead the bureaucratic structure that we don't need and that's one of our problems four thousand soldiers also means four thousand men in support of a four star headquarters so if you're a choice four thousand troops that fight or a four star headquarters troops that fight go away that's when you have to have civilian leadership that's informed decisive determined start their very interesting indeed thank you for breaking down some of that rhetoric and convoluted so it really helps everyone check out your op ed for time dot com very informative piece thank you for coming on douglas macgregor who share your time. i. all right guys here's the latest news on the war on terror front u.s.
